One hundred years ago Henry Heinz was inspired by a shoe advertisement for '21 styles'. He began totting up his own product range and even though it extended beyond 57, something attracted him to the number, it seemed so distictive, almost mystical. It was then that he coined '57 Varieties', a phrase which has since passed into the language. Today Heinz markets many thousands of products around the world under many brand names and turns over more than 6 billion. In the UK the company's traditional lines, like Heinz Baked beans and Heinz Tomato Ketchup, have recently been joined by innovative products like Heinz Spaghetti Hoops Pizza and Heinz Sooty Pasta Shapes. Not the 58th and 59th varieties, but the 361st and 362nd!
